Practice “mindful speech,” as some Eastern spiritual traditions urge.
Before speaking, ask yourself: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?
Pass all words through these gates or “filters.” Whenever possible, have them pass through all three filters cleanly. Perhaps there are times when two of the filters may supersede the third one (i.e., something true and necessary may not always be kind). But this test can be effective at reminding us it’s sometimes best to hold our tongue.
